inside the deck

how it works

step 1

pick a type of spark

  • playExperiment without needing a good result.
  • unwindGet out of your head and into the process.
  • discoverFollow what emerges instead of deciding what the art should become.
  • surprise meA mix of all three. We’ll pick one for you.
step 2

set your level of depth

Make for the process, or go a little deeper. Slide between art as therapy, a bit of both, and therapeutic art. You can change it any time.

step 3

get your spark

Your prompt appears on the card. Not the right one for today? Tap Give me another.

hi, I’m Ashleigh

made by an art therapist

I’m Ashleigh Gureckas, a professional art therapist in Canada and the founder of Discover Art Therapy. I’m a graduate of the Kutenai Art Therapy Institute, where I later taught and coordinated clinical placements, and I’m a member of the Canadian Art Therapy Association.

The deck is a creative tool, not a therapy session. It gives you somewhere to start, and what you make and what it means are up to you.

Make a collection of accidental-looking marks on purpose: drips, scribbles, uneven lines, smudges or imperfect shapes.

sound familiar?

your art supplies deserve your love

Enough of the inner critic stealing your creative joy. This prompt generator is designed for that moment before you make the first mark, when the critic is the loudest. It says things like “don’t waste your supplies” and “it’s not worth it.” None of that is true, and you need to practise play, unwind and loosening perfectionism. That’s exactly what these prompts are designed for.

Each prompt is only a few sentences long. There’s nothing to copy and no technique to master, and a few uneven marks on a page counts.

no need to make it perfect

two ways in

make for the process, or go a little deeper

Every prompt in the deck is art as therapy or therapeutic art. Art as therapy prompts start with the materials and the making: marks, colour, torn paper. Many have no image to aim for, only marks to make. Therapeutic art prompts ask you to make something in response to your own day, like a map, a place or a creature.

Move the slider to choose which you get. You can change it any time.

you are here

hands on

art as therapy

Playful, creative, material and process focused.

Make a mark you normally wouldn't keep. Instead of covering or correcting it, repeat it somewhere else on the page.

the middle

a bit of both

A blend of creative process, metaphor and gentle curiosity.

Each time you tap, the deck draws from either side, so you’ll see a mix.

a little more reflective

therapeutic art

Metaphor rich, expressive and gently self-exploratory.

Create a visual transition from “doing” to “being.” Let your materials show the shift in whatever way makes sense to you.
